King 'Afa has not only reshaped the art of tattooing but also bridge cultural divides, threading a needle through tradition, modernity, and societal acceptance.
From the Streets to the Studios of Influence
King 'Afa's journey to becoming a cultural icon is one of resilience and reinvention. Born in the US and raised in Tonga since 2 years old, his early years were shaped by exposure to simple minimal village-island life with harsher rough-realities of life in Tonga and Fiji that tourist do not know.
Growing up amongst "bad boys" of PETIA and MAUFANGA town in central Nuku'Alofa, TongaTapu. He attended an all boys Tonga College 'Atele for 2 years https://youtu.be/7SzLVtAlpvY?si=8q0b7rkBDwZmN4jp

Tongans boys to men often clash in Fiji, New Zealand, Australia and United States. We have a long history of war 300 years of war between Tonga-Fiji-Samoa. In 1990s-2000s Tongans vs Samoans and Tongans vs Fijians in Suva City Fiji are always in a bar and street brawl. "I have been around these turf war violence since childhood." People who had only been to resorts in Fiji had never seen the reality of life in downtown Suva and project housings in Raiwaqa and Raiwai and village life in Nabua and Nadonumai, Tamavua Village downhill from rich Tamavua Heights and urban settlement" or a "low-income community" located near the affluent Namadi Heights area in Suva, Fiji. These are "hidden village by the gutter", and the socioeconomic divide between the two areas.

In the United States, King 'Afa traveled alone to America on the Spring of 2002 and began tattooing in neighborhoods riddled with violent street gang culture in Los Angeles, Bay Area, Sacramento and Salt Lake City and West Valley, Utah ; Tongans, Samoans, Mexicans, El Salvador, SkinHeads,Hells Angels, Mongols, Kings of Cali, Blacks-African-American; Bloods,Brims,Piru and Crips, Asians; Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Filipinos, Russians, Armenians & Arabs. https://www.hcn.org/issues/issue-303/the-gangs-of-zion/
Tattoos in these underworld communities were often viewed as marks of affiliation, rebellion, or survival.
These street gang rival clashes in Los Angeles, marked by deep cultural rifts from dysfunctional families, almost ended his life from 6 multiple gunshots in 2011 of 22 rounds collected from shells.
King-Afa directed and produced 3 hip-hop music videos that caused a turf war between Polynesians street gangs in South Bay Los Angeles from Inglewood-Hawthorne-Compton-Carson-Long Beach neighborhoods. It was the first time a local Tongan music artists from Los Angeles and South Bay California had been in a music videos in 2010. King-Afa wanted to give his young people a future and another life, but many lived the street and serve life. He was ambushed at close range by 3 street gangbangers that hospitalized him for a month and 7 months disabled to walk.
“I'm the tattoo artist who survived the murder attempt of the underworld ” King-Afa
Yet, it was in these crucibles of adversity that King 'Afa's unwavering commitment to preserving his cultural art form was forged. https://interactives.stuff.co.nz/2018/09/southside-rising/
But King 'Afa saw beyond the stigma. He envisioned tattoos as a sacred narrative—a way to honor history, express identity, and foster pride.
Over time, his work shifted the perception of tattoos from underground symbols to celebrated art, worn by individuals at the pinnacle of their fields.
Bridging Cultures Amidst Conflict
King 'Afa’s work has not come without challenges. Over the years, he has faced harsh criticism from within the Polynesian community in the United States, New Zealand, and Australia for tattooing foreigners with Polynesian designs.
Many in the diaspora, disconnected from their traditional roots, struggled to accept the idea of outsiders wearing these sacred symbols.
Despite this uphill battle with cultural appropriation, King 'Afa has remained steadfast in his mission: to give pride back to Pacific Islanders living overseas who have lost touch with their heritage. By tattooing foreigners, he has created global value for Polynesian tattoo art, ensuring it is seen and respected worldwide.
Reviving Lost Traditions
King 'Afa’s impact goes beyond Polynesia. He has been instrumental in reviving cultural tattoo arts that were fading into obscurity. As early as 2001, while studying engineering in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, he began researching and revitalizing Filipino tattoo, Micronesian tattoo, Native American tattoo, African tattoo, Taino tattoo, and even Aztec and Mayan tattoo traditions. In the wake of the global changes following 9/11, he worked to preserve these cultural legacies, emphasizing their universal importance and significance.
By blending ancient traditions with modern artistry, King 'Afa has bridged cultural divides, creating tattoos that resonate with individuals from diverse backgrounds. His work elevates tattooing as a universal art form while honoring the sacred origins of these cultural expressions.
The Keeper of Tradition
Central to King 'Afa's mission is the preservation of Tongan tattoo art, known as TATATAU.
In a time when much of Polynesia's cultural heritage has been diluted by colonial influences—American, French, British, and German—he has fiercely protected the authenticity of this art form in the faka-Tongan way.
By ensuring that Tongan tattoos remain distinct in design structure and storytelling from the Samoan tattoo; TATAU ( design faa-Samoa) and Fijian tattoo; VEIQIA + SAMUQAWE ( design in the Fijian-iTaukei) traditions.
King 'Afa not only honors these individual cultures but also underscores their interconnectedness as the foundational societies of Polynesia.
“Fiji, Tonga and Samoa are the foundation cultures of the Polynesian Society, we are the first Polynesian cultures. To respect a culture is to preserve its essence, its originality,” King 'Afa explains.
Shattering Stigmas and Building Bridges
Tattoos, once associated with gang members, motorcycle clubs, drug dealers and ex-convicts, have become a mark of prestige under his influence.
His clients now include a diverse spectrum of society, from US Army rangers, USAir-Force pilots, USMarine Raiders and Navy SEALs to Hollywood directors, producers, corporate executives, pastors, and even Ph.D. holders, medical doctors and Professors.
By tattooing individuals who embody positive societal change, King 'Afa has transformed tattoos into symbols of resilience, cultural pride, and achievement.
Yet, this paradigm shift is not merely aesthetic. It’s a cultural revolution.
In the Pacific Islands, where tattoos carry deep historical and spiritual significance, King 'Afa’s work has helped break down the barriers of stigma, fostering acceptance even among church leaders and traditionalists.
“The tattoo is no longer just skin-deep. It’s a bridge—between the past-history and present-stories, between cultures, and between people of colors, race, genders, political and religions.” King-Afa
A Revolution Inked in Heritage
King 'Afa’s cultural revolution is about more than art; it’s about reclaiming and redefining identity.
From the gritty & grimy street gang infested low-income neighborhoods of Los Angeles and the Bay Area to the polished offices of Hollywood and Washington, his tattoos carry stories that resonate far beyond the skin.
Each outline, each pattern is a blueprint to his mission: to preserve Polynesian, Micronesian heritage while elevating the art form into a medium of personal and cultural empowerment.
In an era where cultural authenticity is often overshadowed by commercialization,
King 'Afa stands as a guardian of tradition known as puke-puke-fonua (binding-land-ocean-space-culture-people) in Tongan, ensuring that Polynesian tattoo, Micronesian Tattoo and Melanesian tattoo and art remains not just a relic of the past but a living, breathing testament to the resilience and creativity of its people.
A Legacy of Ink and Impact
King 'Afa’s work is a masterclass in transformation. He has not only redefined the tattoo but has also reshaped the way society perceives it.
For his clients, a King 'Afa tattoo is more than "getting blasted" or "getting tatted-up" as often called by Polynesian Americans in 2010s. It is an art collection of historical cultural landmark of identity, and a statement of pride.
For Polynesian culture, his work represents a renaissance, ensuring that the stories of the islands continue to be told, one tattoo at a time.
King-Afa is crafting more than art—he’s crafting a movement. And with every needle stroke, he reaffirms his place as a pioneer, a storyteller, and a bridge-builder between worlds.
He has elevated his art of tattoo from its garage stages to a respected art form embraced by professionals across various industries.
Mentorship and Legacy in Polynesian Tattoo Art
King 'Afa’s journey through the world of tattoo is marked not only by his contributions to some of the most iconic tattoo studios but also by his profound impact as a mentor to aspiring artists across the globe.
In 2005, King 'Afa trained at Moko Ink in Grey Lynn, Auckland, New Zealand—the first Polynesian tattoo studio in New Zealand, founded by Māori carver-tattoo artist Inia Taylor III https://youtu.be/ePqfnkzAQjQ?si=ImA5zkZUH-j6U_UJ
, who served as the art design assistant for the groundbreaking New Zealand film Once Were Warriors (1994), established Moko Ink in 1998 with the late Samoan tatau master Sua Suluape Paulo, who was murdered and tragically passed away in 1999.

King 'Afa honed his skills in professional tattooing equipment, Māori tattoo and Maori carving art, Samoan tattoo designs, and Cook Islands tattoo art in 2005.
From 2006 to 2011, King 'Afa worked at Zulu Tattoo in Los Angeles, widely regarded as the best tattoo shop in LA at the time. Founded by pioneering Key West African American tattoo artist Roni Zulu and his wife Texan Khani, Zulu Tattoo attracted an impressive roster of high-profile clients, including Grammy winner Christina Aguilera, NBA legend Dennis Rodman, actor Will Smith, and American talk show host Montel Williams.
